Class 504 emu arrives at Bury Interchange.1 viewsThe end was in sight for the electrified Manchester-Bury route and the Class 504 emus in April 1991. Driving Motor Brake Second M65452 leads a service from Manchester Victoria into Bury Interchange.
Class 506 M59404M at Hadfield.0 viewsClass 506 twilight on the 29th November 1984. The 1500v DC units were in their last few weeks of operation on the services from Manchester Piccadilly to Glossop & Hadfield. Entering service in June 1954, they remained as the only 1500v DC trains in the UK after the rest of the electrified line to Sheffield was closed beyond Hadfield in July 1981. In this view looking East with the brooding hills forming part of the Longdendale Valley, the two tracks of the former Woodhead Route disappear into the distance.
Withdrawn D1070 -'Western Gauntlet' at Swindon Works.5 viewsHeavily stripped, Class 52 D1070 -'Western Gauntlet' was awaiting scrapping at Swindon Works in February 1979. The loco was a product of Crewe Works, entering service in October 1963. Withdrawn from Plymouth Laira Depot on the penultimate day of 1976, D1070 acheived 1,312,000 miles in its brief 13 year career, but by the end of May 1979 it ceased to exist.
Gloucester/Cravens Twin at Southport.3 viewsThe last operational asbestos free Cravens Class 105 (M53812) and Gloucester Class 100 (M53355) operating from Newton Heath Depot, were paired together as a twin set for their last few months in traffic. The unit was employed on the Steamport shuttle from Southport Station to the museum at the former locomotive depot at Derby Road on September 23rd 1984 during a joint BR/Steamport open day. The DMU was to be saved as part of the national collection but was vandalised beyond repair at Crewe whilst in store.

EPS 37601 - Folkestone Harbour.0 viewsAs the tide begins to come in, 37601 sits on the viaduct at Folkestone Harbour with the Pathfinder Tours 'Atomic Harbourmaster' railtour on October 20th 2007. Out of sight at the other end of the train was fellow EPS class 37, 37603. This was one of the last diesel hauled trains to traverse this line. The itinerary on that day included a trip along the Dungeness Branch. It was a long day - an 06.15 start from Crewe on Saturday morning and only getting back to Crewe at 01.24 on Sunday morning!Dec 10, 2015

This was a time-honoured Summer service that ran out and back on a Saturday running via East Lancashire and Copy Pit.

This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history.
