The loco was originally built in South Africa by CH Funkey & Co of Alberton, near Johannesburg. It was bought by the FR in 1993 and heavily rebuilt, being fitted with a turbo-charged Cummins 335HP, NT 855 L4 engine. The rebuilt locomotive entered service in 1997.

The itinerary on that day included a trip along the Dungeness Branch.
