47434 at Farington Junction.4 пъти видянаOn the 29th March 1987, Class 47, 47434 brings a Blackburn to Wembley Football Special off the 'back line' as it approaches the WCML at Farington Junction. The track in the foreground leads to the loco exchange sidings, put in place at the time of electrification in 1972/73 so that Southbound freights could change traction from diesel to electric. With the demise of wagonload freight in the early 1980s using the S&C, the practice ceased and the sidings have remained unused.

Cravens Class 105, M54456 at Croston.3 пъти видянаCoupled to a Derby built Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second in blue & grey livery, former Eastern Region Cravens Class 105 Driving Trailer M54456 was still in rail blue at Croston on August 13th 1983. The odd couple were working the 16.15 Ormskirk to Preston service. The downgrading of the former main line from Preston to Ormskirk is evident with the abandoned platform on this once double track railway.

47035 at Vigo on the Lickey Incline.2 пъти видяна47035 toils up the Lickey Incline with a relief SW/NE service formed of MkI stock on a hot Saturday September 5th 1981. 47035 and its train had assisted the previous train hauled by 47480 up the incline. As 47480 restarted, the two services separated and followed each other towards the summit. In todays health & safety obsessed world, can you imagine this happening now! In a sign of the more civilised times back then, the two youthful enthusiasts wanted to know which 47 was on the train in front.

Class 45, 45051 arrives at Exeter St Davids.2 пъти видянаVery much a routine sight at the time, 45051 slips into Exeter St Davids with a lengthy NE/SW service formed of MkI stock on July 27th 1978. The former GWR bracket signals are still in use, and what was the Exe Valley bay platform on the right is full of parcel vans waiting to be loaded. Along the platform can be seen BRUTE trollies, another common sight at every main station, they too along with the Peak, the MkIs and the vintage signals belong to a vanished world.

Class 110 Calder Valley DMU E52081 at Manchester Victoria.1 пъти видянаA once familiar sight of a well-worn first generation DMU stood at an equally well-worn Manchester Victoria, on September 28th 1979. A BRCW Class 110 3-car DMU with DMCL E52081, complete with its first class saloon, was bringing up the rear of a tea-time service to Leeds via Halifax and Bradford. The former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Calder Valley main line was the stamping ground for these units fitted with 180hp Rolls Royce engines for coping with the gradients on the cross Pennine route.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 пъти видянаDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.13 Февруари 2015
