Class 25, 25145 at Manchester Victoria.5 次查看In September 1979, Class 25 25145 was the wallside pilot bank engine at Manchester Victoria. The locomotive was on standby to bank eastbound freight trains up the steep gradient to Miles Platting. The wallside pilots, along with the old ramshackle Manchester Victoria with its coastal buffet, visible here in the shadows behind 25145, are long departed.

47351 at Talacre.8 次查看A rather grimy Class 47, 47351 is about to pass the former LNWR Signalbox as it brings a loaded train of HAA Coal Hoppers out of Point of Ayr Colliery, and onto the North Wales Coast Main Line at Talacre on July 26th 1978. The coal was destined for Fiddlers Ferry Power Station near Warrington. Point of Ayr Colliery closed in 1996.

Class 26, 26007 departs from Leith Docks.6 次查看Class 26, 26007 departs from Leith Docks with an empty coal working on July 24th 1981. 26007 was originally the pioneer D5300, built by BRC&W at Smethwick in 1958.

Class 104 E50563 at Lancaster Up Yard.3 次查看Following a minor derailment whilst entering Lancaster with a Leeds to Morecambe service on March 5th 1979, the following day the 4-Car Class 104 set was moved to what remained of the Up Yard at Lancaster for the set to be examined and minor repairs carried out prior to returning to its home depot at Neville Hill, Leeds. Nearest the camera was Composite Driving Trailer E50563. In attendance was a British Rail Commer/Dodge Van, reg no. URC 555S, which was almost new at the time!

DMUs at Newton Heath Depot.4 次查看Golden light at Newton Heath Depot on the very early morning of September 15th 1990. In the foreground are withdrawn Class 104s, M53421 & M53464, with M53493 & M53444 on the adjacent siding. In the left background is a split 2-Car Class 101, with the DMBS having some bodyside damage. Also present were two Class 115 Suburban DMU cars, 53839 & 53842.

47472 at Blackrod.3 次查看47472 with 7 Mark I Coaches in tow, calls at Blackrod whilst working the 12.20 Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on July 21st 1983.

08001 at Swindon Works.5 次查看In the British Rail TOPS numbering system, 08001 was numerically the first of the class, but actually the fifth 08 to come off the production line at Derby in 1952, numbered 13004. The loco was withdrawn from service in June 1978 from Gateshead Depot and was sent to Swindon Works for disposal. 08001 is seen awaiting its fate, having been stripped of useful components, the loco was stood outside Swindons famous A Shop in February 1979. In the yard beyond is a Presflo Wagon, an LMS CCT Van & 6w Milk Tanks.

Class 25, 25078 at Wigan Springs Branch.4 次查看Sunday engineering work over, 25078 brings an overhead line maintenance train back to Wigan Springs Branch on October 14th 1984. In the background fellow class 25s, 25141 & 25188 stand in the depot sidings, withdrawn and awaiting a one-way journey to the scrapyard.

37013 at Farington Curve Junction.0 次查看37013 trundles along the Up Slow as it approaches Farington Curve Junction whilst working the Saturday only Blackpool North to Sheffield formed of Mark 1 stock on August 13th 1983. This was a time-honoured Summer service that ran out and back on a Saturday running via East Lancashire and Copy Pit.

08954 at Plymouth.2 次查看With the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.十一月 07, 2015

Class 45 45005 passes Dawlish Warren.2 次查看On a rather overcast 8th April 1980, 45005 accelerates a lengthy NE/SW service made up of MkI stock on the Down through road at Dawlish Warren. With mechanical signalling and plenty of loco-hauled trains - Happy Days!十月 02, 2015

Class 25, 25221 at Wigan Springs Branch.3 次查看Withdrawn Class 25 25221 pokes out from under Warrington Road bridge at the side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on June 30th 1984. 25221 was originally D7571, built at Derby Works in 1963, it was withdrawn in January 1984 and after lanquishing for a while at Wigan, was scrapped at Swindon Works in 1986.三月 08, 2015

Class 40, 40082 at Northwich Depot.6 次查看On a damp 9th September 1984, 40082 was stabled outside Northwich Depot between duties. The loco was new from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-Le-Willows in June 1960 as D282. Its first allocation was at York (50A). It spent 13 years as an Eastern Region machine before being transferred to the London Midland Region in 1973. 40082 was withdrawn from service due to power unit damage in November 1984 and was scrapped at Crewe Works in January 1986.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 次查看Dating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.二月 13, 2015
