Master & Slave Class 13s at Tinsley Yard.7 次查看A pair of the Class 13 'Master & Slave' shunters, 13001 & 13003, bask in the winter sunshine between duties in January 1979. Created for use in Sheffield Tinsley Marshalling Yard, they, like the yard that was their stamping ground, are but a memory.

Class 47, 47503 at Dent.4 次查看High up in the Yorkshire Dales, at Englands highest main line station, with frost still on the sleepers in late morning, Class 47, 47503 calls at Dent with five Mark 1 coaches forming a Leeds to Carlisle stopping service on the 8th December 1987. This was a lean period for the Settle & Carlisle Line, with only a handful of passenger trains daily, and virtually no freight, the line was under threat of closure.

Class 76, 76022 at Reddish Electric Depot.3 次查看It is three months since the 1500V DC Manchester to Sheffield line was closed as a through route, and the Class 76 electrics that plied the route on a daily basis for nearly 30 years, are gathered together on October 3rd 1981 at Reddish Depot awaiting their fate. 76022 had become a minor celebrity as it was the only Class 76 to retain the old Lion & Wheel emblems on its Rail Blue paintwork. It was still hoped that the route would re-open, but it was not to be - 76022 was eventually scrapped in 1983.

Class 108 M52051 at Bescar Lane5 次查看In rural West Lancashire, A Class 108 2-Car DMU formed of M52051 & M51936 arrives at Bescar Lane whilst working a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on April 9th 1983. The station here was in a time warp, with an ex LYR Signalbox, timber level crossing gates, semaphore signals and station buildings that had British Rail posters from 1971 announcing the change to decimal currency, and on one board the tattered remains of an LMS poster!

Class 03, 03016 at Swindon Works.3 次查看Keeping company with a couple of six-wheel milk tankers and crane runner wagon, A rather tired-looking 03016 has returned to its birthplace at Swindon Works for one last visit in February 1979. The loco had been constructed here some 21 years earlier in March 1958. Surplus to requirements, 03016 was withdrawn from service on the day before New Years Eve 1978. By the end of May 1979 the loco ceased to exist. There is a lovely red loco oil lamp on the ground alongside the cab steps.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 次查看Dating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.
