Warship 818 at Swindon Works.5 viewsThe lost Warship. After being withdrawn from active service in 1972, Class 42 Warship, 818-'Glory' was 'preserved' at Swindon Works, and over the years became a gate guardian usually on display near the turntable, in full view from passing trains on the main line. The closure of Swindon Works, announced in GWR150 year, saw the planned exhibition at Swindon Works cancelled, and in 1986 as the rundown of the works began, 818 was put to the torch.

As 47480 restarted, the two services separated and followed each other towards the summit. In todays health & safety obsessed world, can you imagine this happening now! In a sign of the more civilised times back then, the two youthful enthusiasts wanted to know which 47 was on the train in front.
