Class 37, 37037 at Ely.4 katseluaThe driver of Class 37, 37037 awaits the off from Ely with a service from Kings Lynn to Liverpool Street on the 2nd May 1980. Despite the warm Spring day, the steam heat is on.

47291 departs from Skipton.3 katseluaA well timed burst of sunshine highlights 47291 -'Port of Felixstowe' departing from Skipton with the Hertfordshire Railtours 'Thames Eden Pullman' from London Kings Cross to Carlisle on the 6th May 1989. The train went out over the S&C and returned from Carlisle over Shap. Formed of refurbished BR InterCity Charter Unit Mark I stock, the tour had been hauled from Kings Cross to Leeds by the unique electric loco, 89001.

Class 47, 47322 at Preston.4 katselua47322 stands at the North end of Platform 6 at Preston Station with a train of former 16 Ton Mineral Wagons on the 12th April 1987. The wagons had been converted for filling with spoil and spent ballast, the train here was en-route to Kirkham DCE Tip, situated at the end of truncated former Marton Direct Line that once led to Blackpool Central. The wagon behind the loco has had rectangular holes cut in the sides to prevent overloading, and has had a D prefix added to its running number B589703.

40091 at Crewe Works.3 katseluaWithdrawn Class 40, 40091 awaits scrapping at Crewe Works on July 4th 1987. In the far background are the sheeted remains of the two Class 86s, 86211 & 86429 destroyed in the accident at Colwich Junction in September 1986. 40091 was new from Vulcan Foundry as D291 in August 1960 and was a London Midland Region loco during its 24 year operational life. It was withdrawn in 1984 with bogie fractures and mechanical problems and was finally scrapped here at Crewe in December 1988.

76057 at Reddish Electric Depot.2 katseluaClass 76 Tommies bite the dust at Reddish Electric Depot in August 1980. As the Woodhead route traffic contracted, Surplus Vacuum Braked only locos were stored around the back of the depot keeping company with Class 25, 25199. 76057 had been withdrawn from service in 1977. 12 of the 14 steam heat fitted Tommies used on Manchester-Sheffield passenger workings had classical Greek names. As E26057 the loco carried the name 'Ulysses' from 1960 to 1970. The loco was scrapped at Reddish in 1983.

Gloucester Class 100, M56111 at Longsight TMD.4 katseluaGloucester Class 100 Driving Trailer Composite M56111 was stabled with various other items of rolling stock, including two more Class 100 vehicles, at Longsight TMD on June 18th 1978. After BR use, M56111 became an instruction coach on the Ministry of Defence railway system at Moreton-On-Lugg. It was eventually scrapped in 1985. Alongside is the Longsight Overhead Line Maintenance Train, with two former LMS vintage coaches visible.

Withdrawn 40158, 25141 & 25188 at Wigan Springs Branch Depot.2 katseluaWithdrawn locomotives queue up at the northern side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on April 1st 1984. 40158 was withdrawn due to worn wheelsets in December 1983 and was scrapped at Doncaster Works in September 1984. 25141 was withdrawn in September 1982 and scrapped at Swindon Works in January 1987. 25188 was made redundant in August 1982 and was also consigned to history at Swindon Works in March 1987.

Class 37, 37251 at Swansea East Dock.1 katselua37251 keeps company with a pair of 20 Ton brake vans whilst Sunday resting in the sidings at Swansea East Dock on October 11th 1981. The locomotive was new from English Electric at Vulcan Foundry on December 30th 1964 as D6951, and its first home was at Cardiff Canton Depot (86A). In August 1967 the loco was reallocated to the Eastern Region and following a nomadic life was transferred back to Cardiff in October 1976. The loco was withdrawn in 2001 at subsequently scrapped by Booths of Rotherham.

37013 at Farington Curve Junction.0 katselua37013 trundles along the Up Slow as it approaches Farington Curve Junction whilst working the Saturday only Blackpool North to Sheffield formed of Mark 1 stock on August 13th 1983. This was a time-honoured Summer service that ran out and back on a Saturday running via East Lancashire and Copy Pit.

08954 at Plymouth.2 katseluaWith the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.07.11.2015

47033 arrives at Dawlish.1 katselua47033 and its 6-coach train of Mark 1 coaches has emerged from Kennaway Tunnel and is running alongside a busy looking Marine Parade, as it arrives at Dawlish whilst working a Paignton to Exeter St Davids local stopping service on April 8th 1980.07.11.2015

Class 45 45005 passes Dawlish Warren.2 katseluaOn a rather overcast 8th April 1980, 45005 accelerates a lengthy NE/SW service made up of MkI stock on the Down through road at Dawlish Warren. With mechanical signalling and plenty of loco-hauled trains - Happy Days!02.10.2015

Class 25, 25221 at Wigan Springs Branch.3 katseluaWithdrawn Class 25 25221 pokes out from under Warrington Road bridge at the side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on June 30th 1984. 25221 was originally D7571, built at Derby Works in 1963, it was withdrawn in January 1984 and after lanquishing for a while at Wigan, was scrapped at Swindon Works in 1986.08.03.2015

Class 40, 40082 at Northwich Depot.6 katseluaOn a damp 9th September 1984, 40082 was stabled outside Northwich Depot between duties. The loco was new from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-Le-Willows in June 1960 as D282. Its first allocation was at York (50A). It spent 13 years as an Eastern Region machine before being transferred to the London Midland Region in 1973. 40082 was withdrawn from service due to power unit damage in November 1984 and was scrapped at Crewe Works in January 1986.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 katseluaDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.13.02.2015
