Deltic 55010 at Doncaster Works.6 katseluaWhat a way to treat a legend.......... An open day was arranged at Doncaster Works on the 27th February 1982, when all the surviving Deltics were on display in the works yard. Amongst the crowds was 55010-'The Kings Own Scottish Borderer', the first Deltic to reach 2 million miles in January 1973. The loco presented a sorry sight, work stained, shorn of nameplates and with rust patches erupting through the paintwork. 55010 was withdrawn from service on Christmas Eve 1981, and was scrapped in May 1982.

The tour had started from Liverpool Lime Street and was bound for Lincoln. 76025 hauled the tour from Guide Bridge, via Woodhead to Rotherwood Sidings, where a pair of Class 31s took over. This & the return journey with the same loco, was the last time a Class 76 would haul a passenger train. Closed in July 1981, this side of Penistone Station is now abandoned and covered in trees.

Cravens Class 105, M54456 at Croston.3 katseluaCoupled to a Derby built Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second in blue & grey livery, former Eastern Region Cravens Class 105 Driving Trailer M54456 was still in rail blue at Croston on August 13th 1983. The odd couple were working the 16.15 Ormskirk to Preston service. The downgrading of the former main line from Preston to Ormskirk is evident with the abandoned platform on this once double track railway.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 katseluaDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.13.02.2015
