Cravens Class 105 M50784 at Morecambe Promenade.5 visualizzazioniIn the 1970s a ride on one of these was something to be avoided, rattles, the smell of diesel, and noise from the underfloor engines all adding to the experience. Now 30 years on, having suffered Class 142s, a ride on a Cravens DMU would be quite luxurious. On May 6th 1979, M50784 was at Morecambe Promenade Station with a departure to Preston. The former Midland Railway Station here, was closed in 1994, despite its Seafront location. The 'new' Morecambe Station is now sited nearer the town centre.

Class 08, 08525 at York.1 visualizzazioniOn August 5th 1978 a rather work weary looking 08525 was parked in the goods yard at York between duties. The loco would now be standing in what is the station car park! A routine sight at the time, in the background is a BR 20 ton brake van and a newly liveried Commer Rail Express Parcels Van. 35 years on, in September 2013, 08525 is still employed on the main network as one of the shunters at Neville Hill Depot, Leeds resplendant in the bright East Midlands Trains livery.

Class 03, 03016 at Swindon Works.3 visualizzazioniKeeping company with a couple of six-wheel milk tankers and crane runner wagon, A rather tired-looking 03016 has returned to its birthplace at Swindon Works for one last visit in February 1979. The loco had been constructed here some 21 years earlier in March 1958. Surplus to requirements, 03016 was withdrawn from service on the day before New Years Eve 1978. By the end of May 1979 the loco ceased to exist. There is a lovely red loco oil lamp on the ground alongside the cab steps.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 visualizzazioniDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.Feb 13, 2015
