40013 passes Farington Junction.vista 2 vecesWith the Leyland Truck & Bus Factory as a backdrop, Class 40 40013 hurries the 11-Coach F&W Railtours 'Cumbrian Whistler' past Farington Junction on the 6th October 1984. The tour had started at Plymouth and 40013 handled the leg from Birmingham New Street to Preston. The train eventually reached journeys end at Workington behind 40028. This was a real swansong for 40013 with a passenger working on the WCML as in days of old, the loco being withdrawn from service just 12 days after this image was recorded.

Class 40, 40013-'Andania' at Blackburn.vista 3 vecesAfter being withdrawn from active service in October 1984, 40013 became a London Midland Region Exhibition Loco, and was towed to Open Days and Gala Days as required. Complete with some gaudy embellishments and carrying its name once more, the loco was stabled in the sidings adjacent to Blackburn Station on the evening of the 27th July 1985. The loco was eventually stored at Crewe in 1988 before passing into preservation. All of the buildings in the background in this view have since been demolished.

Class 110 'Calder Valley' E52080 at Skipton.vista 4 vecesAlmost at the end of its BR career, a Class 110 'Calder Valley' DMU with E52080 leading, awaits departure from Skipton whilst working from Morecambe to Leeds on May 6th 1989. Fitted with Rolls-Royce engines, the original 3-Car sets were introduced in 1961 for use on the steeply graded ex LYR Calder Valley route between Manchester Victoria, Bradford & Leeds. A partial refurbishment during the early 1980s saw many of the sets reduced to 2-Cars to save money.

55018-'Crepello' arrives at York.vista 3 vecesEvening at York on September 22nd 1979, as 55018 -'Crepello' reaches journeys end with a semi-fast working from Kings Cross. This is a vanished scene now totally transformed with electrification and simplification of the track layout. It is as far removed now, as the era of Gresley Pacifics was then. 55018 was named after the racehorse that won the St Ledger at Doncaster in 1957. The loco was new in November 1961 and almost survived until the end of ECML Deltic operation, being withdrawn in October 1981.
