Hastings Units at Hellifield.vista 7 vecesAt the rear of the 'Long Thin Drag' railtour on the 12th April 1986, a pair of Hastings Power Cars were placed as 'Insurance' should problems arise during this lengthy tour. Set 1032 formed the main section of the train, with power cars from set 1001 bringing up the rear as the tour passed Hellifield during a lucky burst of decent light on an otherwise overcast day.

Class 24, 24066 at Doncaster Works.vista 6 vecesPreviously allocated to Edinburgh Haymarket Depot, Class 24, 24066 had been withdrawn from service in February 1976 and was at Doncaster Works for scrapping in June 1978. Final disposal of the former D5066, which was vacuum braked only, came in September 1978. The image taken at the works open day, clearly illustrates the perils of photography at such occasions!

Class 47, 47503 at Dent.vista 4 vecesHigh up in the Yorkshire Dales, at Englands highest main line station, with frost still on the sleepers in late morning, Class 47, 47503 calls at Dent with five Mark 1 coaches forming a Leeds to Carlisle stopping service on the 8th December 1987. This was a lean period for the Settle & Carlisle Line, with only a handful of passenger trains daily, and virtually no freight, the line was under threat of closure.

HST Power Car 43011 at Dawlish Warren.vista 5 vecesThe changing face of the HST fleet. 43011 leads a London Paddington to Plymouth service past Dawlish Warren and its lower quadrant signals, on the 29th May 1986. The power car is still in its original Blue & Grey livery, with the trailers in InterCity 125 Executive livery.
43011 was destroyed in the accident at Ladbroke Grove in October 1999.

Class 08, 08626 at Allerton Depot.vista 5 vecesWithdrawn and heavily cannibalised, 08626 was stabled in the sidings to the North of Allerton Depot in the suburbs South of Liverpool on the 26th March 1993. 08626 had been constructed at Derby Works in 1959 as D3793, and was allocated to Widnes Shed (8D) when new. After 28 years in traffic it was withdrawn in 1988 and scrapped here at Allerton by Coopers Metals in March 1994.

50046 at Cockwood Harbour.vista 2 vecesLow tide at Cockwood Harbour on the Exe Estuary on the 29th May 1989, as Class 50, 50046 -'Ajax' plods westwards in the evening light, having come to the rescue of an errant HST. The 50 would be returning the HST to Laira Depot for attention.

Class 104, M53493 at Croft Street Sidings, Preston.vista 4 vecesClass 104, M53493 was stabled with several sets of first generation DMU sets at Croft Street Sidings, adjacent to Preston Power Box on the 29th November 1986. The Sidings and Power Box are situated on the site of the former Preston MPD, closed in 1961 following a roof fire in 1960. Dominating the skyline is St Walburges Church, designed by Joseph Hansom of Hansom Cab fame, it has the tallest parish church spire in England at 309ft. The church was completed in 1854.

Gloucester Class 100, M56111 at Longsight TMD.vista 4 vecesGloucester Class 100 Driving Trailer Composite M56111 was stabled with various other items of rolling stock, including two more Class 100 vehicles, at Longsight TMD on June 18th 1978. After BR use, M56111 became an instruction coach on the Ministry of Defence railway system at Moreton-On-Lugg. It was eventually scrapped in 1985. Alongside is the Longsight Overhead Line Maintenance Train, with two former LMS vintage coaches visible.

37013 at Farington Curve Junction.vista 0 veces37013 trundles along the Up Slow as it approaches Farington Curve Junction whilst working the Saturday only Blackpool North to Sheffield formed of Mark 1 stock on August 13th 1983. This was a time-honoured Summer service that ran out and back on a Saturday running via East Lancashire and Copy Pit.

08954 at Plymouth.vista 2 vecesWith the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.07 de Noviembre de 2015

47033 arrives at Dawlish.vista 1 veces47033 and its 6-coach train of Mark 1 coaches has emerged from Kennaway Tunnel and is running alongside a busy looking Marine Parade, as it arrives at Dawlish whilst working a Paignton to Exeter St Davids local stopping service on April 8th 1980.07 de Noviembre de 2015

Class 45 45005 passes Dawlish Warren.vista 2 vecesOn a rather overcast 8th April 1980, 45005 accelerates a lengthy NE/SW service made up of MkI stock on the Down through road at Dawlish Warren. With mechanical signalling and plenty of loco-hauled trains - Happy Days!02 de Octubre de 2015

Class 25, 25221 at Wigan Springs Branch.vista 3 vecesWithdrawn Class 25 25221 pokes out from under Warrington Road bridge at the side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on June 30th 1984. 25221 was originally D7571, built at Derby Works in 1963, it was withdrawn in January 1984 and after lanquishing for a while at Wigan, was scrapped at Swindon Works in 1986.08 de Marzo de 2015

Class 40, 40082 at Northwich Depot.vista 6 vecesOn a damp 9th September 1984, 40082 was stabled outside Northwich Depot between duties. The loco was new from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-Le-Willows in June 1960 as D282. Its first allocation was at York (50A). It spent 13 years as an Eastern Region machine before being transferred to the London Midland Region in 1973. 40082 was withdrawn from service due to power unit damage in November 1984 and was scrapped at Crewe Works in January 1986.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).vista 2 vecesDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.13 de Febrero de 2015
