Class 116 DMU at Stratford-Upon-Avon.5 viewsOn midsummers day, 21st June 1986, a pair of Tyseley allocated Class 116 3-car DMU sets, with 53872 leading, are seen at Stratford-Upon-Avon with a late evening service to Birmingham. Within a few years this familiar scene would vanish as Class 150s took over local services in the West Midlands area. In 2011, the 150s are being replaced by new Derby built Class 172 DMUs.

Class 110 'Calder Valley' E52080 at Skipton.4 viewsAlmost at the end of its BR career, a Class 110 'Calder Valley' DMU with E52080 leading, awaits departure from Skipton whilst working from Morecambe to Leeds on May 6th 1989. Fitted with Rolls-Royce engines, the original 3-Car sets were introduced in 1961 for use on the steeply graded ex LYR Calder Valley route between Manchester Victoria, Bradford & Leeds. A partial refurbishment during the early 1980s saw many of the sets reduced to 2-Cars to save money.

Class 25, 25188 at Horwich Works.3 views25188 stands at the South end of the former Locomotive Erecting Shop at Horwich Works, during the Works Open Day on August 16th 1980. Alongside is stripped Mark 1 Restaurant First Open Coach, 1025. Stripping and conversion of Mark 1 Coaches for departmental use was one of the jobs that was keeping the works busy. To the right of the Erecting Shop, where the compressor was located, used to be the site of the small loco shed which was home to the 18" gauge locos used on the works internal system.

08423 at Horwich Works.3 views08423 in the yard of the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Workshops at Horwich on May 10th 1986. This was twilight time for the once busy works, rolling stock repairs had ceased in 1983 and only the Foundry and Spring Shop remained. BREL sold the operation in 1988 and the direct rail connection to the Bolton - Preston line at Blackrod was removed in 1989. Much of the site remains intact, including the former Locomotive Erecting Shop complete with its massive overhead cranes. Heritage Centre anyone?

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 viewsDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.Febrero 13, 2015
