Class 115, M51888 at Aylesbury.6 viewsStanding on what was the former ex Great Central Up Line to London Marylebone from the north, several Class 115 DMU sets were stabled for the weekend north of Aylesbury Station on the 4th October 1981. Leading was Driving Motor Brake Second M51888. Built in 1960 at Derby for use on services from Marylebone over the ex GC & GC/GW joint lines, the units were also employed on longer distance workings to Nottingham Victoria in the twilight years of the Great Central Main Line as a trunk route.

50046 at Cockwood Harbour.2 viewsLow tide at Cockwood Harbour on the Exe Estuary on the 29th May 1989, as Class 50, 50046 -'Ajax' plods westwards in the evening light, having come to the rescue of an errant HST. The 50 would be returning the HST to Laira Depot for attention.

The Deltic Scotsman Farewell -York - 2/1/82.3 viewsHistory in the making at York on the 2nd January 1982. In poor weather conditions, 55015 -'Tulyar' brings the final BR Deltic hauled Northbound passenger train, 'The Deltic Scotsman Farewell' into York on the 2nd January 1982. The train was an out and back from Kings Cross to Edinburgh, ensuring that after 20 years as Kings of the ECML, these locomotives bowed out in style. It was only fitting for me to come here, as it was at York many years previously that a saw my first Deltic.

47662 approaches Starcross.5 viewsA tight squeeze on the A379, as Class 47 47662 heads Northbound approaching Starcross with the 15.44 Plymouth to Sheffield service on the 31st May 1988. The Class 47 entered traffic in 1964 numbered D1611 and was renumbered 47032 in 1973. Fitted with ETH in 1986, the loco was then renumbered 47662 and at the time of this picture was allocated to Bristol Bath Road. In 1987 it became 47817 and was selected for conversion to a Class 57/3 in 2003, subsequently gaining Virgin Livery as 57311-'Parker'.

40093 at Reddish Electric Depot.2 views40093 keeps company with 76024, under the wires at Reddish Electric Depot on August 31st 1980. New in 1960, 40093 was withdrawn from service in December 1983 following power unit damage, and was scrapped at Doncaster Works in May 1984.

47292 at Selby.3 viewsA scene from the days when Selby was part of the East Coast Main Line. Having observed the speed restriction over the Selby Swingbridge, 47292 accelerates along the Up Through Road with a southbound Saga Holidays working made up of Mark I stock on September 12th 1981.

Withdrawn Class 306 EMUs at Vic Berrys, Leicester.1 viewsWithdrawn Class 306 Liverpool Street - Shenfield electric multiple units, 073, 033 & 066 take refuge under the substantial girder bridge that took Upperton Road in Leicester over the former Great Central Main Line at this once busy location. Dating from 1949 the vintage units were awaiting the call to the adjacent scrapyard operated by Vic Berry on July 19th 1982. The well-worn units had been made redundant by newly built class 315 EMUs from BREL York.

46001 at Newquay.1 viewsOn a perfect Summers evening, a rather woe-begone looking 46001 awaits departure from Newquay with a local service to Plymouth formed of 5 MkI coaches on July 23rd 1980. 46001 was new from Derby Works in October 1961 as D138. The loco was withdrawn from service on December 14th 1980, just shy of 5 months after this image was recorded. The loco was scrapped at Swindon Works in July 1982.

37013 at Farington Curve Junction.0 views37013 trundles along the Up Slow as it approaches Farington Curve Junction whilst working the Saturday only Blackpool North to Sheffield formed of Mark 1 stock on August 13th 1983. This was a time-honoured Summer service that ran out and back on a Saturday running via East Lancashire and Copy Pit.

08954 at Plymouth.2 viewsWith the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.Noviembre 07, 2015

Class 25, 25221 at Wigan Springs Branch.3 viewsWithdrawn Class 25 25221 pokes out from under Warrington Road bridge at the side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on June 30th 1984. 25221 was originally D7571, built at Derby Works in 1963, it was withdrawn in January 1984 and after lanquishing for a while at Wigan, was scrapped at Swindon Works in 1986.Marzo 08, 2015

Class 40, 40082 at Northwich Depot.6 viewsOn a damp 9th September 1984, 40082 was stabled outside Northwich Depot between duties. The loco was new from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-Le-Willows in June 1960 as D282. Its first allocation was at York (50A). It spent 13 years as an Eastern Region machine before being transferred to the London Midland Region in 1973. 40082 was withdrawn from service due to power unit damage in November 1984 and was scrapped at Crewe Works in January 1986.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 viewsDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.Febrero 13, 2015
