Waterloo & City Line Class 487 Car S51 at Swindon Works.2 viewsA moment in time captured in Swindon Works famous A Shop on the 13th May 1985. All the parahernalia connected with the overhaul of Waterloo & City Line Class 487 Driving Car, Number S51 is on display in this view. With everything from reels of new cable to a tin of Swarfrega, the car is stripped down to virtually a bare shell. These cars had a nocturnal life spending their time on the 1.47 Mile underground line between Waterloo & Bank. The cars were built by English Electric at Preston in 1940.

73001 arrives at Southampton Central.4 viewsA pair of Southern Region rail built home signals act as gate guardians, as a very smart looking 73001 enters Southampton Central with a short mail/parcels working bound for Weymouth on July 28th 1978. The first of the Class 73 Electro-Diesels, 73001 emerged from Eastleigh Works in February 1962 as E6001. The class was indigenous to the Southern Region for most of their working lives, but in a bizarre twist, five 73s ended up on Merseyside in the 1990s, including the locomotive seen here.

31202 at Blackpool North.4 viewsIn a scene reminiscent of the halcyon days of excursion traffic to Blackpool, 31202 has arrived at Blackpool North with the Summer dated working from Sheffield on September 6th 1978. Under the watch of the train crew, eager and expectant holidaymakers pour off the train and make their way down the platform ready for the delights that Britains biggest holiday resort has on offer. These were the twilight years of such workings, a Summer Saturday working from Sheffield had been a regular since the busy 1950s.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 viewsDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.Febrero 13, 2015
