Class 50, 50004 at Cowley Bridge Junction.8 viewsIn large logo livery, Class 50, 50004-'St Vincent' plods past Cowley Bridge Junction, just north of Exeter with a Paignton to Paddington Service on the 28th May 1981.

Class 306 EMU, 055 at Berrys Scrapyard Leicester.3 viewsDating from 1949, a withdrawn Class 306 'Liverpool Street-Shenfield' EMU 055 awaits its fate at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard in Leicester on the 19th July 1982. The unit is standing in the entrance to what was once the Goods Yard situated at the side of the old Great Central Main Line, just South of Leicester Central Station. The formation of the main line is to the left of the unit, with the former Great Central Railway Goods Warehouse at Leicester Central visible on the horizon on the far left.

Class 47, 47451 at Farington Junction.5 viewsWith the four tracks of the West Coast Main Line in the foreground, 47451 brings a Carlisle to Stoke-on-Trent Excursion off the 'back line' at Farington Junction on the 1st May 1989.
The 47 was new from Crewe Works in 1964 numbered D1568. It was renumbered to 47451 in November 1973, the loco was withdrawn from service in 1991 and scrapped at Booths, Rotherham in 1994.

50049 -'Defiance' at Exeter St Davids.4 viewsThe station clock is at 15.32 on the 25th July 1987, as 50049 -'Defiance' prepares to depart from Exeter St Davids with a service to London Waterloo. Later that year 50049 had a radical transformation into a Railfreight machine, renumbered 50149.

40044 at Reddish Depot.3 viewsFollowing a runaway and derailment at Chinley with a loaded stone train in September 1978, 40044 was moved to Reddish Electric Depot for assessment. This was the less damaged end of the loco. Despite the rundown of the Class 40 fleet, repairs were authorised, the work being done at Crewe. 40044 was eventually withdrawn from service in January 1985.

West Yorkshire PTE Class 101 at Hest Bank.0 viewsA view from the footbridge at Hest Bank looking North on October 17th 1977. A refurbished Metro-Cammell Class 101 complete with West Yorkshire PTE symbols crosses to the Down Line whilst working a Leeds to Morecambe service. The unit would traverse the now rarely used link from Hest Bank on the WCML to Bare Lane on the outskirts of Morecambe.

Class 120 Cross-Country DMUs stabled at Chester TMD.0 viewsKeeping company with the depot breakdown crane, three of the stylish Swindon built class 120 Cross-Country DMU sets were stabled at Chester Depot on Sunday August 9th 1981. The original fleet of these well-appointed units totalled 194 individual cars, when constructed at Swindon they were produced using the construction jigs for former Great Western diesel railcars. The last of the class 120s were withdrawn in 1989.

HST Power Car E43107 at Selby.2 viewsSurrounded by infrastructure of the past, the driver of HST Power Car E43107 accelerates onto the Up through road at Selby with an Edinburgh Waverley to London Kings Cross ECML service on September 12th 1981. The HST has just negotiated the 40mph speed limit over the Swing Bridge that was the bottleneck on East Coast Main Line traffic through Selby. Although Selby is no longer on the ECML, 43107 now renumbered 43307 is still in service with East Coast.

37013 at Farington Curve Junction.0 views37013 trundles along the Up Slow as it approaches Farington Curve Junction whilst working the Saturday only Blackpool North to Sheffield formed of Mark 1 stock on August 13th 1983. This was a time-honoured Summer service that ran out and back on a Saturday running via East Lancashire and Copy Pit.

08954 at Plymouth.2 viewsWith the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.Noviembre 07, 2015

Class 25, 25221 at Wigan Springs Branch.3 viewsWithdrawn Class 25 25221 pokes out from under Warrington Road bridge at the side of Wigan Springs Branch Depot on June 30th 1984. 25221 was originally D7571, built at Derby Works in 1963, it was withdrawn in January 1984 and after lanquishing for a while at Wigan, was scrapped at Swindon Works in 1986.Marzo 08, 2015

Class 40, 40082 at Northwich Depot.6 viewsOn a damp 9th September 1984, 40082 was stabled outside Northwich Depot between duties. The loco was new from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-Le-Willows in June 1960 as D282. Its first allocation was at York (50A). It spent 13 years as an Eastern Region machine before being transferred to the London Midland Region in 1973. 40082 was withdrawn from service due to power unit damage in November 1984 and was scrapped at Crewe Works in January 1986.

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).2 viewsDating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.Febrero 13, 2015
