Class 104, 53589 at Leyland.Переглядів: 6On the bright morning of the 1st May 1986, A Class 104 3-Car DMU set, with 50589 leading, calls at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria Service. This was a familiar time-honoured scene, the class 104s dominating these services during the the 1970s & 1980s, until ousted by Class 120 Cross-Country units for a short time, until the arrival of new Class 150 Sprinter Units in 1987/88.

Class 24, 24066 at Doncaster Works.Переглядів: 6Previously allocated to Edinburgh Haymarket Depot, Class 24, 24066 had been withdrawn from service in February 1976 and was at Doncaster Works for scrapping in June 1978. Final disposal of the former D5066, which was vacuum braked only, came in September 1978. The image taken at the works open day, clearly illustrates the perils of photography at such occasions!

Reading Signal Works Shunters.Переглядів: 5Not the best of images, but impossible to repeat now. A chance visit to Reading Diesel Depot on November 15th 1981, found all the shunters involved with the nearby Signal Works. Nearest in the line up was withdrawn 97020, a Ruston & Hornsby 88DS, works number 408493 dating from 1957, Barclay 0-4-0 Class 06, 06002 was next, it had travelled down from Scotland as a source of spares for the third in the line up, Class 06, 97804 (ex 06003) which was the replacement loco for 97020.

73001 arrives at Southampton Central.Переглядів: 4A pair of Southern Region rail built home signals act as gate guardians, as a very smart looking 73001 enters Southampton Central with a short mail/parcels working bound for Weymouth on July 28th 1978. The first of the Class 73 Electro-Diesels, 73001 emerged from Eastleigh Works in February 1962 as E6001. The class was indigenous to the Southern Region for most of their working lives, but in a bizarre twist, five 73s ended up on Merseyside in the 1990s, including the locomotive seen here.

40032 arrives at York.Переглядів: 3Class 40, 40032 arrives at York with a Newcastle to London Kings Cross relief service formed of Mark 1 stock on September 15th 1978.
The loco emerged new from Vulcan Foundry in September 1959 numbered D232. It was named 'Empress of Canada' in April 1961. By the time this picture was taken in 1978 the nameplates had been removed and the position was marked on the bodyside by protruding bolt heads. 40032 was withdrawn from service in February 1981 and was scrapped at Swindon in 1983.

Withdrawn D1021 -'Western Cavalier' at Swindon Works.Переглядів: 3With one cab removed and various components scattered like Autumn leaves, D1021 -'Western Cavalier' succumbs to the cutters torch at Swindon Works in February 1979. The locomotive had emerged newly built from the nearby A Shop in June 1963 and in its 13 year career clocked up 1,280,000 miles before being withdrawn from service at Laira in August 1976. Within a few days of this image being recorded D1021 had ceased to exist.

47535-'University of Leicester' passes Kirkham.Переглядів: 2With the new extension to the Fox's biscuit factory taking shape in the background, 47535 -'University of Leicester' departs from Kirkham with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on September 3rd 1988. This was the period when issues with unreliable new class 142s saw a return to some locomotive hauled services in the North West. In the foreground a short rake of departmental wagons include a Grampus, a 21 Ton Mineral Wagon, three 16 Ton Mineral Wagons and a Tube Wagon.

08954 at Plymouth.Переглядів: 2With the roof tops of Plymouth as a backdrop, 08954 was shunting parcel and mail vans at Plymouth station on July 26th 1980. This was a time-honoured scene at all major stations - now sadly consigned to history. The 08 was new from Darington Works in October 1962 numbered D4184, its first home was at Ebbw Junction (86A) and it was tranferred to Laira (84A) in May 1971.Лист 07, 2015

Class 306 EMUs at Leicester (GC).Переглядів: 2Dating from 1949, former Liverpool St-Shenfield Class 306 EMUs, 055, 033, 083 & 078 wait at the entrance to Vic Berrys Scrapyard at Leicester on July 19th 1982. The location is adjacent to the former Great Central Main Line, that last saw a passenger train in 1969 when the DMU service between Rugby and Nottingham was withdrawn. Upperton Road bridge that once spanned the extensive trackwork at this location, was demolished in 2007 - yet another bit of the infrastructure of the old GC Main Line lost forever.Лют 13, 2015
