Class 47, 47503 at Dent.4 viewsHigh up in the Yorkshire Dales, at Englands highest main line station, with frost still on the sleepers in late morning, Class 47, 47503 calls at Dent with five Mark 1 coaches forming a Leeds to Carlisle stopping service on the 8th December 1987. This was a lean period for the Settle & Carlisle Line, with only a handful of passenger trains daily, and virtually no freight, the line was under threat of closure.

Class 40, 97406 (40135) at Wigan Springs Branch Depot.4 viewsA study in Winter light of a well-weathered Class 40, 97406 at Wigan Springs Branch Depot on December 6th 1986. Formerly 40135, the loco was reprieved for use on the Crewe remodelling project in 1985. Following the work at Crewe, the loco was used for various departmental workings until withdrawn on December 16th 1986. The loco is now preserved by the Class Forty Preservation Society at the East Lancashire Railway,

Class 40, 40177 at Allerton TMD.5 viewsOn a quiet Sunday afternoon in July 1978 at Allerton Depot in the southern suburbs of Liverpool, Class 40 40177 was coupled to an almost new Mark 3 Coach which was here for a visit to the depot wheel lathe. 40177 was new from Vulcan Foundry at Newton-Le-Willows in February 1962 as D377. Its first allocation was to Camden Depot, and remained a London Midland Region allocated loco for all of its 22 year carrier. It was withdrawn with worn tyres in July 1984 and scrapped at Crewe Works in April 1986.

HST 253031 at Newton Abbot.7 viewsHST set 253031 in original Inter-City 125 livery stands at Newton Abbot on the 9th April 1980.

Class 40, 97406 (40135) at Wigan Springs Branch Depot.4 views97406 catches the Winter light whilst stabled at Wigan Springs Branch on December 6th 1986. Formerly 40135, the loco was one of a quintet of Class 40s that worked on for use with the Crewe remodelling project in 1985. After Crewe, the locos were used for departmental workings on the London Midland Region. Officially withdrawn on December 16th, just 10 days after this image was recorded, it looks as though the 40 has worked for the last time, with wooden chocks under the wheels.

Class 25, 25200 at Barrow-In-Furness.5 views25200 was stabled in the north facing bay at Barrow-In-Furness on September 28th 1982. Alongside in departmental use was an early LMS Brake Van.
The class 25 emerged new from Derby Works in June 1965, numbered D7550. It was in service for just over 20 years, being withdrawn in February 1986. The loco was scrapped by Vic Berry at Leicester in 1987.

Class 08, 08919 at Sheffield Tinsley Depot.5 viewsAmidst a sea of Railfreight Liveries, a well-worn Class 08, 08919-'Cadeby', still retained BR blue livery at Sheffield Tinsley Depot on the 29th September 1990.

Class 108 M52051 at Bescar Lane5 viewsIn rural West Lancashire, A Class 108 2-Car DMU formed of M52051 & M51936 arrives at Bescar Lane whilst working a Southport to Manchester Victoria service on April 9th 1983. The station here was in a time warp, with an ex LYR Signalbox, timber level crossing gates, semaphore signals and station buildings that had British Rail posters from 1971 announcing the change to decimal currency, and on one board the tattered remains of an LMS poster!

Class 108, M54253 at Parbold.5 viewsA 2-Car Class 108 DMU, with M54253 at the rear, was on a Southport to Wigan Wallgate Service at Parbold on the 13th September 1986.

Swindon Class 120 DMU at Kirkham.6 viewsA 3-Car Hybrid Class 120 DMU set, with W51573 leading, heads for Blackpool South as it departs from Kirkham, on the 2nd August 1985. The two Swindon built driving trailers have a Metro-Cammell class 101 trailer car sandwiched between them.

47645 accelerates away from Preston.2 viewsTrackside at Factory Lane Penwortham on a glorious summer evening, with the goods lines in the foreground, 47645 -'Robert F Fairlie' accelerates the 18.28 Blackpool North to Nottingham service along the down slow line, away from the Preston stop on June 12th 1989. The loco was new from Crewe Works in February 1965 numbered D1659, lasting in service 25 years before being withdrawn due to fire damage in February 1990. 47645 was scrapped by MC Metals at Glasgow in April 1992.

Class 104, 53589 at Leyland.6 viewsOn the bright morning of the 1st May 1986, A Class 104 3-Car DMU set, with 50589 leading, calls at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria Service. This was a familiar time-honoured scene, the class 104s dominating these services during the the 1970s & 1980s, until ousted by Class 120 Cross-Country units for a short time, until the arrival of new Class 150 Sprinter Units in 1987/88.
