47280 at Lostock Hall Depot.10 viewsIn Railfreight Livery, Class 47, 47280-'Pedigree', shunts rolling stock in the former Lostock Hall MPD, on the 7th November 1986. The depot had been the last operational steam shed on BR in August 1968, and when the diesels moved out in the early 1970s, it became a wagon repair depot.
Prototype 89001 at Leyland.10 viewsThe unique prototype Class 89, 89001, approaches Leyland on the Down Fast Line with a test train on the 28th September 1987. Besides a Derby RTC Test Coach 10, the rest of the train consisted of the BREL 'International Stock'. 89001 had been built at Crewe in 1986 as a potential contender for a fleet to be constructed for the then forthcoming East Coast Main Line Electrification Project. In the event the BREL Class 91s were chosen as the production series locomotives, and the stylish 89 remained a one off.

The 3-car set has received blue & grey livery. To the left of the unit can be seen the entrance to Hall Road Depot, with an ex-works (Horwich) class 502 stabled on the centre siding, between the up & down lines.
Ex Class 501 Sandite Unit at Southport.10 viewsAs part of a joint BR/Steamport Museum open day, Merseyrail ex Class 501, 'London District' Sandite Unit, was on display at Southport Station. Former driving driver M75180 is nearest the camera on September 28th 1985. Doors have been cut into the cab fronts to enable the unit to work safely in the tunnel sections of the system beneath Liverpool City Centre.

The units would have their set numbers altered into the 5081xx series.
508140 at Hall Road Depot.10 viewsActing as gate guardian, 508140 was stabled at the side of Hall Road Depot in April 1995. The depot closed in 1997, and the site was cleared in 2009.

Class 502, M28352M at Aintree.10 viewsIn rail blue livery, a 3-car set with M28352M leading, runs into Aintree Station in April 1979. Much has changed at Aintree since the Class 502s held sway along here. The LMS concrete lamp standards, contemporary with the emus, and the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway canopy on the up platform, are long gone.
